At ARA NINI Health, we are lucky to have a beautiful community of healthcare professionals who generously give their time at our events and talks. At our Pilates and skin event this year, we received so many thoughtful questions. Here are some answers to the ones you asked most often.
We asked Consultant Dermatologist Dr Emma Amoafo-Mensah to break down two common skincare questions we hear all the time.

Q: How do I get rid of hyperpigmentation from PCOS?

A: Treating PCOS-related hyperpigmentation starts with managing the root cause — which is often hormonal. If PCOS is triggering acne, tackling that with hormonal treatments (like the pill or spironolactone) alongside lifestyle changes (balanced diet, reducing sugar, weight management) is key.
When it comes to fading the marks themselves, your go-to topicals include retinoids, azelaic acid, alpha arbutin, and sometimes hydroquinone. And of course — never skip your sunscreen. In-clinic options like chemical peels or lasers can also help.
Q: Are red and blue LED masks actually worth it, or just a trend?

A: LED light therapy can be helpful — but think of it as a bonus, not a base. It’s fine as an add-on for acne, hyperpigmentation, or signs of ageing, but your first line of defence should always be evidence-backed topicals.
Most at-home LED masks aren’t as strong as the ones used in clinics, so results might be limited. And they’re pricey, so don’t splurge unless you’re also investing in a solid skincare routine.
⚠️ Heads up: Some blue light can actually worsen hyperpigmentation in darker skin, so do your research before buying.
